Sweet Moment

First, I know that we haven't posted in a very long time. I just haven't uploaded any recent photos since our computer crashed. I am a little behind. I just wanted to blog about Spencer from last night.

Background:

Late dinner 7ish P.M.

Tawnya had left to go to a baby shower.

House was a mess, because, well let's face it, Spencer loves to dump everything and spread it all around (books, toys, kitchen utensils, food, clothes, shoes, paper, magazines . . .).
(Below, not our house, but a good representation)

Jed was tired for really no good particular reason, except for a mind-filling day of Microbiology research.

Spencer didn't want to eat anything at dinner besides shredded cheese and a Gogurt. Needless to say, his tray was a mess and didn't look appetizing.

Jed wanted to clean up dinner and the kitchen and not have Spencer destroy any more of the house for the day.

Story:

I decided that in order for me to clean Spencer needed to be kept in one spot and occupied long enough for me to clean. I know a trick. I gave him a Bomb Pop. He loves those things. He will suck on it and then draw on his tray and be very content the whole time as long as there is still popsicle.

While he was eating, I cleaned up dinner and the kitchen and a good portion of the apartment. All the while Spencer was just fine and content. Score one for the parent!

Time 7:30ish P.M.

He finished his popsicle and looked even more content now that he was full of pseudo-sugary goodness. So I took the sticky kid out of the sticky high chair and washed up the sticky kids hands, hair and face. I set Spencer down so that I could clean the sticky high chair tray.

As I was cleaning the tray, I see Spencer walk into the kitchen and he has his binky in his mouth and his blankie in one hand being towed behind him. And with his other hand has his scriptures (Book of Mormon) tucked underneathe his arm. He then proceeds to "Uh, Uh" at me (Spencer language for wanting something) and takes me by the hand to his rocking chair in his bedroom where he backs up into my lap so that I can read to him.

That was one of the sweetest moments in my life (Jed, just a little teary eyed). Tawnya and I read scriptures every night to Spencer and most of the time I don't think he is really paying attention (no pictures to capture an energetic kid's attention). However, last night I realized that although Spencer may not know the content of the scriptures, he knows that they are important enough for him, that before he goes to bed he needs them.

Score lots for the kid.

What a great moment. I had a similar one with my little niece. I'm living with them right now so I get a lot of time with these older kids and their expanded vocabulary. I was doing other things when she came to me and handed me her Book of Mormon and said "Will you read me a story about Jesus?" It was so adorable and of course even though I was busy I couldn't say no! What a beautiful blessing children are.

What a sweet little guy. We sure miss you guys. I totally know what you mean about not thinking they are paying attention but they get more than we think they do. This is Crystal by the way.

That is so beautiful! I hope you keep up with that good habit because I now have an eleven year old son who refuses to sleep until he has had scriptures read to him. He was even on a scout campout once and called me from there to tell me he could not get to sleep because he hadn't read scriptures. I told him I could read over the phone or I was positive that the scout leader had brought some scriptures. He checked, and the scout leader agreed to read scriptures to the boys before bed. You have started a wonderful tradition.

The language of the scriptures is very comforting to a child, and even to us adults!

What a doll! Aren't you amazed at how in-tune these little people are. The other morning Joey told us he had a dream that he was sitting on Jesus's lap and He was reading scriptures to him. Lij and I both got teary. Then this morning my boys played "scripture store" (so they've also picked up on capitolism, along with religion) and then "read" scriptures to each other. Love moments like that. (and good work getting your house clean too!)

It's amazing what kids pick up on, even when they are so small! Kudos to you and Jed for reading to him and or teaching him what's right!

I love it! Tanner is only entertained by our BOM picture flap book. Maybe we should try the real thing!
